Understanding what works, what does not and why outcomes diverge from plans under uncertainty.
The question
Complexity-aware design and learning
Projects operate in settings shaped by changing relationships, unequal influence, past decisions and events they cannot predict. Promising interventions can stall; unexpected openings can change their direction.
The work
A retrospective analysis of six CGIAR-linked cases examines unpredictability, path dependence, context, power, and mismatches across spatial and temporal scales. It develops principles for working with complexity, rather than treating departures from plans as implementation failures alone.
